- 1991: Great Salt Lake Comic-Com programme – The “Hellboy” name is used in demon-like character drawing where within a black and white illustration, the character wears a belt with the “Hellboy” name on it.
- 1993: Dime Press #4 – Prototype version of the Hellboy character on the cover
- August 1993: San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 – first full appearance by character in Hellboy, published by Dark Horse Comics.
- 1994: Hellboy: Seed of Destruction – premier comic book ‘mini-series’ featuring the Hellboy character.
The paperback collection received 2 Eisner Awards, and ultimately has been credited as the basis for the initial Hellboy feature film.
Prior to the success of Hellboy as a comic within the Dark Horse Comics collection, DC Comics were approached with the original concept. They apparently loved the idea but were hesitant on involving the word “hell”.
1994: Hellboy: World’s Greatest Paranormal Investigator – A Hellboy solo appearance featured as a 4-page mini special comic.
Hellboy: Seed of Destruction became the collected trade paperback story.- 1994: Hi, My Name is Hellboy in the Celebrate Diversity collector’s edition– A 1-page advertisement showcasing Hellboy’s origins.
